ANSC 422: COMPANION ANIMAL NUTRITION
CALCULATING ENERGY DENSITY AND ANNUAL COST (10 POINTS)
It is important to be able to calculate the energy density and nutrient content of pet foods as well as the annual cost of feeding diets. For the 2 diets below, perform the following calculations:
1. Convert the as-is values for crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and ash to a dry matter basis (2 points).
2. Calculate nitrogen-free extract (NFE) on an as-is and dry matter basis (2 points).
3. Using the modified Atwater values for protein (5 kcal/g), fat (8.5 kcal/g), and NFE (3.5 kcal/g), calculate caloric density on an as-is (kcal/g as-is) and dry matter (kcal/g dry matter) basis (2 points).
4. Based on the feeding recommendations listed, calculate the amount of kcal fed per day (2 points).
5. Calculate the amount of food needed (kg/year) to feed a 30 kg dog for 1 year and the annual cost of feeding the 30 kg dog for 1 year (2 points).
