Which groups of primates make up the anthropoids?
Those primates that belong to the suborder Strepsirhini include all of the lemurs, sifakas, the aye-aye, lorises, and bushbabies. All extant strepsirhine primates are found in Africa and Asia. The species included in this suborder are generally small in body size and range from the very tiny Goodman's mouse lemur (Microcebus lehilahytsara), weighing a mere 30 g (or about an ounce), to the large indri (Indri indri), which weighs around 6-7 kg (13-15 lbs) (see Appendix A). Close to half of all strepsirhine primates are nocturnal. They tend to rely to a large degree on the sense of smell for communication. Indicative of the role that olfactory perception plays, strepsirhine primates have a moist nose or rhinarium that readily picks up scents as well as large mucous membranes housed in a predominant nasal cavity. Additional characteristics that are specific to strepsirhines but are not exhibited by all members of the suborder include a dental tooth comb (see Figure 4-13) and a grooming claw. A dental tooth comb is formed by closely positioned mandibular incisors and canines (the bottom front teeth) that horizontally protrude. As the name implies, the dental tooth comb is used for grooming, but in some species it is also used to scrape tree sap or gum. Strepsirhine primates have a claw-shaped nail on the second digit of their feet. This claw is used to groom but can also be used to extract insects out of tree bark. Some nocturnal strepsirhines exhibit solitary foraging strategies, while other diurnal strepsirhines live in large social groups. The suborder Haplorhini includes the tarsiers, all of the monkeys, apes, and humans. Haplorhine primates occupy a large geographic distribution with extant species found in Africa, Asia, and South and Central America. Compared to the strepsirhines, these primates are (on average) larger in body size. Pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea), the smallest of the haplorhines, weigh 100 g (3.5 oz), while an adult male gorilla can weigh up to 170 kg or 375 lbs. Haplorhine primates are predominantly diurnal but there are two genera of nocturnal haplorhines. These primates rely more on vision than on olfaction. They have dry rhinaria, and their eyes are enclosed in a bony socket (the bony socket of tarsiers is nearly complete), whereas strepsirhine primates have open eye sockets. The haplorhine primates have a larger brain-to-body-size ratio than do the strepsirhines, and their brains exhibit a complex cerebral cortex. Consequently, haplorhine primates are capable of more intricate learned behaviors or cognitive behavior. In addition, with the exception of the orangutan, haplorhine primates live in complex social groups. Each primate suborder is further divided into a number of different superfamilies. Within the Strepsirhine suborder there are two superfamilies, and within the Haplorhine suborder there are four. The superfamilies are further divided into even more exclusive taxonomic categories
