Anatomy Crayfish belong to the phylum Arthropoda and are classified as crustaceans. They have a hard exoskeleton made of chitin. They also prey on other invertebrates. The body is divided into three main regions: the head, thorax, and abdomen. The head is covered by a protective structure called the carapace. The crayfish has segmented appendages, including antennae, which are raised from the head. The antennae contain green glands that excrete liquid waste. The compound eyes demonstrate cephalization, with many individual units for sight. There are pairs of appendages around the mouth for handling food. The crayfish has five pairs of walking legs attached to the thorax. The most anterior swelling is located between the first and second walking legs. The terminal appendages are pincer-like claws. Sperm is deposited in the receptacles located on the base of the third and fourth walking legs. The opening of the sperm duct is located in the fifth walking leg. Observation Anatomy Crayfish External Anatomy Picture of crayfish; identify the chitinous exoskeleton with the help of Figure 24.1. Identify the head, thorax, and abdomen; are they segmented? Explain. Each antenna is located raised from the head. At the base, there is a green gland opening for excretion. Locate the compound eyes, which demonstrate cephalization. Explain your answer. Identify pairs of appendages around the mouth for handling food. Find the five pairs of walking legs attached to the thorax. The most anterior swelling is located between the first and second walking legs. Identify the terminal appendages, pincer-like claws. Sperm from the base of the third and fourth walking legs is deposited in the receptacles. Locate the opening of the sperm duct in the fifth walking leg. Segmentation is the repetition of similar segments in an organism's body, which can be seen most clearly in the phylum ANNELIDA. The fusion of segments into specialized regions is called TAGMATIZATION, which is commonly seen in the phylum ARTHROPODA.

What - Crayfish Dissection Worksheet structures are used for capturing prey and securing and eating food? How are the antennae, chelipeds, walking legs, and swimmerets related? You could observe the exoskeleton of the abdomen and tell the function of each. Is the crayfish most vulnerable to its enemies from the dorsal or ventral side? The crayfish usually molts, sheds its exoskeleton, twice a year. Why does the crayfish "hide" after molts? Name the appendages found on the head of the crayfish. Tell the function of each. Of the systems studied, which two are most unlike the related human system? Why?
