Today we're going to talk about the different types of bone -specific cells that you would find in bone tissue.

So even though these all kind of sound pretty similar, osteoblast, osteocyte, and osteoclast, we can kind of use their names and the language found there to remind ourselves what each of these terms mean.

So osteo generally means pertaining to the bone, which makes sense for these.

Three types of cells, but let's take a look at how their name can further give us a hint as to what their function is.

So an osteoblast is a type of cell that makes the bone material and they basically just secrete all these matrix materials into their surroundings and then once they are surrounded by that secreted material, they turn into an osteosite and lower their metabolism.

So the blast in osteoblast, the suffix blast usually is used to mean something that's undifferentiated.

So in this case it makes sense because an osteoblast then turns and differentiates into an osteosite.

So you can kind of think of it as like almost like an immature osteosite that has yet to, you know, kind of decide its fate in the world and is undifferentiated.

Next, we have an osteosite, which is a type of cell that's embedded in the matrix.

So that's an osteoblast that once embedded in the matrix it creates, turns into an osteosite...
