What you are shown in this question is called a gel electrophoresis.

And essentially this is where you take a bit of dna and you allow it with the help of a bit of electricity in a certain gel substance to move through the gel from one side to the other.

And as it goes, you will see certain lines pop up which indicate the presence of a certain allele or gene.
