Blood flows through two circuits in the body, the systemic and the pulmonary circuits. In the pulmonary circuit, the right side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the lungs, where it releases carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen. In the systemic circuit, the left side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body. After giving up oxygen to the tissues and organs and picking up carbon dioxide, the blood flows back to the heart via a major blood vessel known as the vena cava.

23) Compare the oxygen content in the two circulatory circuits. (Module 19.15A) A) The pulmonary circuit carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs and returns oxygenated blood to the left atrium. The systemic circuit carries oxygenated blood to the organs and tissues of the body and returns deoxygenated blood to the right atrium. B) The pulmonary circuit carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs and returns oxygenated blood to the left atrium.
