The current pandemic has imposed significant threats to people's daily life, and we need help from everybody to combat this pandemic. You are a population geneticist, and we need you to explain the current public health policies to the public. At present time, there are no effective treatments for the disease, and there are several variants of the virus. Public policy is focusing on stopping the viral transmission. Current public policies include limited social gathering, wearing masks, frequent handwashing, and restricted travel. In Ontario, the COVID cases rose in the spring of 2020 (first wave) but reduced dramatically in the summer. However, the cases rebounded in late fall (second wave). Data: (source https://covid-19.ontario.ca/data) Explain the evolutionary trajectory of the virus and why and how the current public policies may help to stop the virus. Keep in mind that the COVID virus has a high mutation rate, short generation time, and a very large population size. Please consider mutation, selection, migration, and other relevant evolutionary mechanisms.
