The diagram below shows the stages during which a virus infects a host cell. During which of the numbered steps does the amount of viral genetic material begin to a. 1; virus enters the cell b. 2; virus RNA enters the nucleus c. 3; new viruses assemble within the cell d. 4; viruses leave the cell
Following binding of spike proteins to ACE2, SARS-CoV-2 likely gains entry into the cell either via fusion of its envelope with the cell membrane or via endocytosis. If the virus must escape the endosome before fusion with the cellular membrane, the virus enters the cytoplasm. Once inside, the virus unpackages and its positive-stranded RNA genome is released. What is endocytosis? What is a lysosome and what is its importance in the cell? What type of macromolecule is RNA?

SARS-CoV-2 virions are made by the host cell machinery. What is an important part of this process? A. The viral genome complexed with N protein docks with the cytoplasmic side of vesicles carrying viral envelope proteins. B. The viral genome translocates across the viral envelope membrane and then binds N protein. C. Vesicles carrying the viral genome complexed with N protein fuse with those carrying Spike protein, which are derived from the Golgi. D. Virions carrying the viral genome bud directly off the plasma membrane, assisted by clathrin coats.
