The Enteropluri-Test system has been designed to identify enteric bacteria in a clinical setting. With this in mind, design your own test system to differentiate among the species of Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Micrococcus presented in Exercise 40. Use the flowcharts presented in the exercise to help you design your system.

Construct a testing flow chart to identify the unknown bacteria. The unknown identity possibilities are: - B. megaterium - E. coli - L. acidophilus - Proteus Mirabilis - Staphylococcus Epidermidis The tests that are to be used in the flow chart are limited to: 1. Staining: • Direct/indirect, Gram, capsule, endospore 2. Motility Testing: • Indole, H2S 3. Biochemical Testing: • SIM, catalase, casein hydrolysis, lactose and maltose fermentation Please include each of the 5 bacteria stated as a result of each of the tests at the end of the flow chart. The flow chart should be like: unknown ----> test name --------> positive and negative ----------> the name of the unknown bacteria

To find listings and charts of biochemical tests that can be used to identify unknown bacteria, you could use Bergey's Manual of Genotypic Analysis. Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology. Bergey's Manual of Bacterial Typing. Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology.

Biochemical test: Medic observation: Sample taken from a suppurative skin wound; the patient had been treated with some antibiotic previously without any response. Medic suspects for a Gram-positive microorganism that ferments mannitol. Optional names for all the 6 unknown bacteria, please make matches: Shigella sp Staphylococcus aureus Salmonella typhi Klebsiella pneumoniae Escherichia coli Pseudomonas aeruginosa
