The figures below show the current and competing phylogenies for the evolutionary placement of turtles, two are based on morphology (anatomy), two are based on molecular (DNA) data. Traditionally, the following taxonomic classes have existed: Class Aves (birds), Class Crocodilia (alligators and crocodiles), Class Squamata (the ‘scaly’ reptiles, lizards and snakes, also called lepidosaurs), Class Chelonia (turtles) and Class Mammalia (mammals). Regardless of the phylogeny that will be eventually accepted below, what changes, if any, will need to be made to the traditional taxonomy and why?
