4. The graph below shows the action potentials recorded for two neurons, A and B, which fire simultaneously. If neuron C is connected to both A and B, and its threshold is +50 mV, will C have an action potential? Explain. (2 marks) 60 (mV) -60 -80 Time (milliseconds)

The diagram below shows an action potential of a typical neuron. The resting membrane potential Vrest is -70 mV. The equilibrium potentials Eion for Na, K, and Cl are shown in the table below. Ion (Eion) Na +60 mV K -90 mV Cl -86 mV Membrane potential (mV) 0 -55 -70 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Time (ms) 6. What is the threshold for this neuron (VT)?

Vm (mV) +50 0 -50 -100 time Answer the following questions about this graph in your own words: 1. Identify this stage and the ion and charge outside the neuron and the ion and charge inside. 2. Name the stage of the action potential and state which ion is rushing into the neuron. 3. Name the stage of the action potential and state which ion(s) are involved. 4. Name this stage of the action potential and describe what is now happening. 5. This is the return to what stage?
The Action Potential of a neuron contributes to the signaling communication between neurons. During a typical action potential, the membrane potential reaches a threshold of -55 mV and then rapidly increases to +40 mV due to the influx of sodium ions (called depolarization). Calculate the inside and outside concentration of sodium ions during depolarization (membrane potential increases from -55 mV to +40 mV) at T = 36 °C. Suppose the inside and outside concentration of sodium before depolarization is 42 mM and 433 mM. Show your work.
