The inner membranes of both mitochondria and chloroplasts are folded into various arrangements. What is the advantage of having a folded membrane rather than a simple interior membrane that follows the same oval shape as the exterior membrane? Question 8 options: a) The folds allow for more surface area for the chemical reactions that occur across the inner membranes. b) The folds cause a necessary change in the organelle's internal pH. c) The folds allow these organelles to interact more efficiently with Golgi bodies. d) The folds in the membranes are a physical barrier against compounds attempting to enter the organelle.

Inside eukaryotic cells, several organelles have sections of membranes that have folds or protrusions. Examples include the inner membrane of the mitochondria, the thylakoids in the chloroplast, and the endoplasmic reticulum. What benefit do these organelles gain by having these structures?
Sri K.
Mitochondria and chloroplasts are the energy-processing organelles of eukaryotic cells. Both organelles contain outer and inner membranes. The inner membrane of the mitochondrion contains many folds. The chloroplasts have a third membrane forming the thylakoids. Molecules such as enzymes responsible for the synthesis of ATP are embedded in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion and the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast.
