If a lipid bilayer is at least 10^8 times less permeable to K+ ions than it is to water, how do the K+ ions that are needed for many cellular functions get into the cell? K+ ion channels provide specific transport for these ions. The membrane prevent the export of ions, maintaining a constant K+ concentration inside the cell. K+ ions can move due to the concentration gradient. Some parts of the lipid bilayer are permeable for K+ ions.
