The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a set of cell surface proteins essential for the acquired immune system to recognize foreign molecules. MHC-I glycoproteins are found on all nucleated cells and present endogenous antigens to cytotoxic T cells. MHC-II glycoproteins are found on antigen-presenting cells and present exogenous antigens to helper T cells. MHC-III glycoproteins are not directly involved in antigen presentation but play a role in the immune response.
