The sliding filament theory of muscle contraction is defined as how muscles contract and create force without creating a muscle can so that the muscles can then move. ATP is required for relaxation and contraction to occur, which takes place in the sarcomere of the muscles. The sarcomere consists of thin filaments that consist of thick and myosin. When calcium is released, it attaches to troponin on the hydrolyzed and inorganic phosphate myosin. ATP is required for the myosin filament to extend and attach to the stroke binding site, causing a power stroke. ATP is then required to release the myosin filament and start the process over.
