The mRNA for a well-known secretory protein is isolated and placed in a test tube in the presence of all the substances required for in vitro protein synthesis. The sequence of the protein produced in vitro is then compared to the sequence of the purified secretory protein. The sequences of the two proteins are not the same. What is the explanation? What enzyme, if any, is involved in the process described in the question?

Describe the process of protein synthesis. The synthesis of a protein involves the DNA code for the protein unraveling, and a complementary copy of the gene of interest being created using mRNA. The mRNA leaves the nucleus of the cell and proceeds to the ribosome, where protein synthesis occurs. The ribosome then follows along the mRNA and reads each codon, which specifies the amino acid sequence in the new protein. Options: Chromosome, Monosaccharide, Alcohol, mRNA, DNA, Nucleus, Ribosome, Amino acid.

Why would a cell initiate the process of transcription? Describe the process of transcription. What happens during RNA processing of mRNA? Define: codon, anti-codon, transcription, translation, redundancy. Is it the case that a small change in DNA will always impact the protein? Explain. What mechanism is in place that ensures the right amino acid is added to the polypeptide? (Think codon-anticodon interaction) What happens if the tRNA enters the ribosome and the codon and anticodon do not match up? Explain the steps of translation: Initiation, Elongation, Termination. What important things happen here? What is one way a cell can make many copies of the same protein? There is a diagram in the lecture notes of the ribosome.

After mRNA translation, most of the proteins undergo folding in order to carry out their molecular function in the cell. Question: Briefly explain why and how does a protein fold? Define denaturation of proteins and list five different ways to denature a protein?
