In the cellular regulatory pathways that control cell growth and proliferation, the products of oncogenes are stimulatory components and the products of tumor suppressor genes are inhibitory components.
The process of carcinogenesis requires often more than one mutation and is therefore considered a multistep process. The process of carcinogenesis requires activation of oncogenes and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes. The three stages in the process of carcinogenesis are called initiation, promotion, and progression.
