Calico Cats are always females. Having learned epigenetics, you can explain the reasoning as follows. The coat color genes producing the patched colors are lethal to males, so only females survive. Different alleles of coat color genes are X-linked subject to random X-chromosome inactivation during early development, resulting in each cluster of cells only expresses coat color genes of one of the two X-chromosome. Thus, this is a female-only epigenetic phenomenon. The coat color genes controlling each of the patched colors are X-linked subject to X-chromosome inactivation only on paternal X-chromosome during early development.
