The picture to the right shows Meiosis 2, which is responsible for creating: Image of a cell with two chromosomes, after crossing over, separating into daughter cells with 2 chromatids each. A. Diploid daughter cells with unique chromatids. B. Haploid daughter cells with unique chromosomes. C. Diploid daughter cells with unique chromosomes. D. Haploid daughter cells with unique chromatids.

Step 1
The question is about Meiosis 2, which is the second stage of the meiotic cell division process. Meiosis is responsible for producing gametes (sperm and egg cells) with half the number of chromosomes as the original cell. Show more…

Procedure 4 Questions 1. The two daughter cells that result from Meiosis I are haploid and unique. a. Which event of Meiosis I results in the creation of haploid cells? That is, why are homologous pairs of chromosomes absent in Meiosis I daughter cells? b. Which event of Meiosis I results in the creation of unique daughter cells? That is, why don't the two daughter cells contain an identical assortment of chromosomes? 2. Explain how you can tell that the 4 daughter cells of Meiosis II are haploid. Hint: are homologous pairs present in the same cell? 3. Explain how you can tell that the 4 daughter cells of Meiosis II are genetically unique compared to each other. Hint: compare the chromosome appearance in each cell. 4. Explain how crossing over results in unique daughter cells at the end of meiosis:

In meiosis, sister chromatids are separated, producing haploid daughter cells. Homologous chromosome pairs are separated, producing diploid daughter cells. Homologous chromosome pairs are separated, producing haploid daughter cells. Kinetochore microtubules attach to both sister chromatids of each homologous pair. The cell prepares for its second round of DNA replication that will occur before meiosis II.
