5. The plasma membrane is made up of two layers of molecules. One end (the phosphate head) is polar and is in contact with the aqueous (watery) fluid both and the cell. Therefore this region is said to be. The interior of the membrane contains tails made of fatty acids and do not interact with the aqueous fluid. The plasma membrane also contains two broad groups of membrane proteins. The first are proteins that penetrate into the phospholipid bilayer. (Some that go all the way through from one side to the other are called proteins. The second group are proteins that adhere to one side of the membrane.

The basic membrane is made of a phospholipid bilayer consisting of 2 layers of phospholipids. A phospholipid consists of a polar phosphate group and two non-polar fatty acid chains. Hydrophobic exclusion forces the fatty acid tails together and the polar head groups readily form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules. As long as there is water on both sides of the membrane, it will hold itself together. The plasma membrane consists of the bilayer and other components. Inserted in the membrane are the transmembrane proteins. These proteins are held in the membrane by hydrophobic exclusion. The plasma membrane also has attachment points to anchor the membrane to the cell and cell surface, as well as identity markers to identify the cell to the immune system. There are several different types of transmembrane proteins. A carrier protein is used to move material across the membrane in either direction.
