The smooth endoplasmic reticulum performs several cellular functions, including the production of lipids and steroids. It also plays a vital role in the detoxification of poisons, drugs, and alcohol. Liver cells play a major role in detoxifying blood. What would a scientist most likely observe in the liver cells of an individual who is a heavy drinker of alcoholic beverages? F. An increased amount of smooth ER G. A decreased amount of smooth ER H. A normal amount of smooth ER J. A complete absence of smooth ER

What is one role of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Madhur L.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum 1. As the garbage disposals of the cell, cellular materials contain enzymes that break down unwanted substances. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum 2. Ribosomes synthesize proteins in conjunction with the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Lysosomes 3. They are particularly abundant in muscle cells for regulating calcium ion concentrations. Mitochondria 4. They are important in ATP production and also play a role in initiating apoptosis (signaling cell death). Golgi apparatus 5. Proteins are packaged and sent off to other areas of the cell by the Golgi apparatus. Peroxisomes 6. Long fatty acid chains are broken down within peroxisomes. Nucleolus 7. The nucleolus is responsible for the production of ribosomes.
All of the following are true of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum EXCEPT (A) it connects the rough endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus (B) it detoxifies the cell (C) it synthesizes steroids (D) it manufactures proteins (E) it synthesizes lipids
