Organize the following statements as they apply to hypertonic, isotonic, or hypotonic solutions. Flushing human cells, which are 0.9% saline, with saline solution for storing contact lenses. When soaked in this type of solution, water molecules will leave the cell, via osmosis, causing it to shrink. When soaked in this type of solution, water molecules will enter the cell, via osmosis, causing it to swell. Immersing human cells, which are 0.9% saline, in freshwater, such as bath water. A solution with higher solute concentration than the cell. A solution with lower solute concentration than the cell. Solute concentrations in the cell and the surrounding solution are equal. A solution of 10% NaCl in water, the NaCl is the solute and water is the solvent. Complete the following exercise about osmosis in blood. Human red blood cells (RBCs) contain intracellular fluid that is osmotically similar to NaCl, which is known as normal saline. A solution that is hypertonic to RBCs contains solute particles and water molecules than blood. Which of these solutions is hypertonic to RBCs? 2.0% NaCl. If RBCs are surrounded by hypertonic solution, water will tend to move out of them, so they will crenate. A solution that is -tonic to RBCs will maintain the shape and size of the RBC. An example of such a solution is . Which solution will cause RBCs to hemolyze? Which solution has the highest osmotic pressure?

Osmosis and Tonicity Hemolysis Red blood cells freely pass water but not salts. Saline solution (0.85% NaCl) is isotonic for RBCs. If RBCs are put in a 0.3% NaCl solution, water movement is from the cell. If RBCs are put in a 5% NaCl solution, water movement is from the cell. Osmosis and Tonicity Plasmolysis Elodea cells live in fresh water (low salt >> hypotonic). Water enters the cell (vacuole) and creates turgor pressure. If an Elodea leaf is put in pond fresh water, water movement is from the cell. If an Elodea leaf is put in a plasmolyzing solution, water movement is from the cell.
