SPINAL CORD AND SPINAL NERVES When seen in cross section, the spinal arrangement of gray matter resembles a butterfly and is called the gray horn. The fine fissure labels the parts of the spinal cord and colors in the region. Attached to the spinal cord are the spinal nerves that carry impulses from the spinal cord to the peripheral nerves and vice versa. The spinal nerves are mixed nerves that pass through the intervertebral foramina of the vertebral column. The spinal nerve splits into a dorsal root and a ventral root. The dorsal root joins the dorsal root ganglion within its intervertebral foramen. The dorsal root ganglion contains the nerve cell bodies of the sensory neurons coming from the body. The ganglion leads to the gray horn of the spinal cord. The central root originates from the ventral horn and innervates muscles. Both the brain and spinal cord have layers that cover the nervous tissue. These are known as the meninges and there are three layers. The outermost layer is the dura mater, which is a tough connective tissue. The middle layer is the arachnoid mater, which is named so because it looks like a spider web. A deeper layer is the subarachnoid cerebrospinal fluid. The deepest layer is the pia mater and it is located on the surface of the nervous tissue. Label the meninges and the structures associated with the spinal cord in both the horizontal view and the lateral view and color them in.
