fMRI stands for functional magnetic resonance imaging, which is a neuroimaging technique that monitors changes in the brain and is less expensive and less risky than other techniques. It also helps to track oxygen levels and blood flow. An fMRI is "a modified version of MRI based on hemoglobin (the blood protein that binds oxygen) instead of water." fMRI's are noninvasive, and only metal objects need to be removed prior to scanning. BOLD signal stands for blood oxygen level dependent.
