Environmental Issue: Water Water is a critical resource. We live on a planet with vast amounts of water; 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. However, most of the water is saltwater. Only a small percentage, about 3% of the water on Earth, is freshwater, and only a fraction of that is available for human use. Therefore, while water appears plentiful, it is in short supply.
