Theoretical Problems (solve these problems before your lab session and bring them on a page to be included in your logbook)
a) Justify the statement, that the wavelength of the oscillation shown in Figure 5.1 is equal to twice the length of the string. Hint: think about extending the string beyond the fixed endpoints.
b) The simplest mode of oscillation is depicted in Figure 5.1. Sketch the next two modes of oscillation that the string could have, if the endpoints are fixed. Hint: think about the boundary conditions; that is, what must be true of the string at the endpoints.
c) Assuming that a copper wire has a fixed cross-sectional area A±ΔA, explain how you could determine its linear mass density μ (in kg m⁻¹) and its uncertainty Δμ from a measurement of A and knowledge of the volume mass density ρ±Δρ. Accompany your explanation with a labelled sketch of the (three-dimensional) wire. Hint: you could derive a result either from algebra (i.e. by manipulating symbols in formulae), or by dimensional analysis (i.e. by manipulating units).
