There are populations of two species of rats on an island. There are currently 100 rats of species A and this species has a growth rate of 60% per year. There are currently 1000 rats of species B and this species has a growth rate of 20% per year. How long before the number of rats of species A is larger than the number of rats of species B?

Step 1
- For species A: 60% growth rate means the population will increase by 60% each year. So, the new population of species A after one year will be 100 + 60% of 100. - For species B: 20% growth rate means the population will increase by 20% each year. So, the new Show more…

The current rat population in New York is currently 2 million, and the observed doubling time for the population is 20 years. Recall: n(t) = n0 * 2^(t/a). (A) Find an exponential model for the population, in millions, t years after 2021. (B) Estimate how long it takes the population to reach 5 million.

5. Suppose there are 500 rats on a certain island in 1973 and 1697 rats on the same island 10 years later. Assume that the number R(t) of rats on the island years after 1973 is an exponential function. (a) Find an exponential function of the form R(t) = Aekt. Let t = 0 represent the year 1973. (b) According to your function R(t), how many rats will be on the island in 2022? (c) How long did it take for the population of rats to double from its 1973 amount? How long will it take to double from its 2020 amount?

A small number (approx 10 ) of mice are introduced into an uninhabited island . Their population grows exponentially initially and after 4 years, reaches a population size of 520 after which the population stays stable. At what point would you expect the population to attain its highest growth rate ? A) when the mice population was first identified B) when the population size is 260 C) the population growth rate remains constant throughout D) when the population size reaches 520
