The atrioventricular valves are located between the atria and ventricles (in bird and mammalian hearts) and allow blood to flow from the atrium to the ventricle, but not in the reverse direction.

The second messenger cAMP is released from the endoplasmic reticulum. It binds troponin and is made by adenylate cyclase. It inhibits a protein kinase and closes calcium channels in the heart. If the SA node is not functioning, an ECG will show no P waves with a HR between 40-60 bpm. There will be no QRS waves. There may be more P waves than QRS waves or higher P waves. The vessels that bring blood directly into the right atrium are the pulmonary vein, coronary sinus, superior vena cava, and inferior vena cava. The cardiac centers in the brain are located in the lower amygdala, cerebellum, pituitary gland, and medulla oblongata. Atrial depolarization occurs before the QRS peak of the ECG. It is not reflected in the T wave of the ECG or the S-T segment of the ECG. It is usually hidden in the QRS peak.
