To remain in their homes, a number of your clients are palliative and on their end-of-life journey. You are a visiting nurse in the community, and your clients include chronically ill people who want to stay in their homes. Sally is an 85-year-old woman with terminal cancer. She has been having trouble keeping her pain controlled and is taking morphine 10mg s/c q4hr with 1mg qh prn for breakthrough pain. She has stated that she is ready to die. She is tired and never quite seems to be comfortable. She knows her life expectancy is short.
Your manager gets a phone call from her physician stating that the client has requested a MAiD (Medical Assistance in Death) and the court has granted it. The MAiD will take place on Thursday. Thursday is your day off, but the client has requested you to be with her until the end. Based on your belief system, what is your answer to the client? Explain how you will tell the client your decision and what your process was to make the decision. No answer is wrong, but you do have to explain why you have chosen to accept or deny her request. Explain what your resources will be to make this decision. One page, double-spaced, APA format. One reference is recommended. Please be careful about using your religious/spiritual belief around death as the reason. It must be about the client and not the nurse.
