Topic 1: The World Culture
Topic Rationale: The perception of culture determines Christian ways to engage culture. The Christian view of culture as an abstract system does not reflect the reality of culture. Culture is cumulative, material, and dimensional. Culture is what Christians make of the world. Potential leaders must be aware of these ideas to lead well.
Objectives: Assess methods to view culture. Evaluate the concept of culture as specific goods.
One way to understand the role of culture in the world is through analysis of its "specific goods" (e.g., Internet, highways, malls, telephone, atomic bomb). Is the concept of "specific goods" a valid assumption about the way the world is or the way the world should be? How would this concept make a difference in the way Christians engage culture? Explain.
