QUESTION 1 According to Darwin, natural selection usually neither preserves nor rejects harmful variations in a population preserves harmful variations and rejects favorable variations in a population. preserves favorable and harmful variations in a population, at random preserves favorable variations and rejects harmful variations in a population. QUESTION 2 Darwin was influenced by other writers and scientists who came before him. Which one of the following ideas influenced his thinking? The idea that the earth is at least hundreds of millions of years old, much older than people thought in the 1800s. Closely related species came from a common ancestor Species change over time due to environmental forces all of these were influences on Darwin's thinking QUESTION 3 What agricultural practice gave Darwin the idea for at least a part of his theory of evolution? crop rotation animal husbandry seed germination artificial selection QUESTION 4 What popular English pass time of the 1700s and 1800s influenced Darwin's life and thoughts? fur coat production hunting shell gathering fossil hunting QUESTION 5 Darwin made many observations of nature. Which one of these observations did he make, which influenced his ideas on natural selection? More individuals of a population are born than survive to reproduce. Populations grow constantly An individual's chance of survival is random. Species do not appear to change over time.

What is the foundation of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory? Describe how this mechanism drives the evolution of an animal species. 15 points. What are ecological niches and how are they able to influence the adaptive success of an animal species? 10 points. Support or argue against the following statement: The more complex life an animal lives, the larger and more complicated the animal's brain is. In detail, describe what the encephalization factor is: how it was developed, what it measures, and how it is applied in order to evaluate an animal species or compare multiple animal species. 20 points. Why are humans "brainer" than other animal species? Name and describe the three evolutionary hypotheses that attempt to explain this mechanism. 20 points.

List the inferences Darwin made concerning his theory of natural selection. Check all 3 inferences. Production of more individuals than the environment can support leads to a struggle for existence among individuals of a population, with only a fraction of the population surviving. All species have such great potential for fertility that their population size would increase exponentially if all individuals that are born reproduced successfully. Survival in the struggle for existence is not random. Populations tend to remain stable in size, except for seasonal fluctuations. Much of this variation is heritable. The unequal ability of individuals to survive and reproduce will lead to a gradual change in a population, with favorable characteristics accumulating over generations.
