U.S. postal regulations state that the sum of the length and girth (distance around) of a package must be no more than 108 inches (see below). girth end of box length Find the dimensions of the acceptable box that has the largest volume if the end of the box is a rectangle that is 5 times as long as it is wide. Be sure you can do this with calculus. The largest possible volume is cubic inches.

Find the maximum volume of a rectangular box that a post office will accept for delivery if the sum of its length and girth cannot exceed 108 in.

A package in the shape of a rectangular box can be mailed by the US Postal Service if the sum of its length and girth (the perimeter of a cross-section perpendicular to the length; see Exercise 4.7.23) is at most 108 inches. Use Lagrange multipliers to find the dimensions of the package with largest volume that can be mailed.

Maximum Volume A rectangular package to be sent by a postal service can have a maximum combined length and girth (perimeter of a cross section) of 108 inches (see figure). Find the dimensions of the package of maximum volume that can be sent. (Assume the cross section is square.)
