Use the following information to answer the next question In 1953, Watson and Crick developed a model of the structure of DNA. The used a trial and error approach which involved compiling discoveries made by other scientists until their model was complete. The following statements describe some discoveries about DNA made before 1953. 1. Chromosomes and genes are composed of DNA 2. DNA is found mainly in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells 3. X-ray diffraction of the DNA molecule shows that it is a helix 4. All of the diploid cells of a particular organism contain the same amount of DNA 5. The DNA molecule is composed of deoxyribose sugar, phosphate, and four different nitrogen bases 6. Analyses of proportions of the nitrogen bases run DNA suggest that thymine pairs with adenine and guanine pairs with cytosine Three discoveries that would have provided essential clues to Watson and Crick' as they developed the model of DNA are given in which statements numbered above? (Enter ONLY the three correct digits in any order. Do not include spaces, commas, etc.) Answer:

Watson and Cricks experiments Which of the following data were available to Watson and Crick when they were trying to determine the structure of DNA? Check all that apply: DNA is composed of 3 basic components: five-carbon sugars, phosphate groups, and 4 different nitrogenous bases. AIl DNA molecules have the same proportions of adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. In DNA, the proportion of adenine always equals that of thymine, and the proportion of guanine always equals that of cytosine: X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the DNA molecule has the shape of a helix. The DNA molecule is composed of 2 polynucleotide chains that are held together by hydrogen bonds between the nitrogenous bases_ The replication of DNA is semiconservative_ DNA always has an equal proportion of purines and pyrimidines: During DNA replication, synthesis of the leading strand is continuous and synthesis of the lagging strand is discontinuous_ The 2 strands of DNA are antiparallel:

The famous model in the photo was built by Watson and Crick in 1953 to demonstrate the secondary structure of DNA. This was not the first attempt at modeling DNA's structure, however. Before 1953 there were several failed attempts. The accumulation of data from different research groups was key to arriving at the correct model. What were the incorrect versions of DNA structure, and how did Watson and Crick get it right? In 1951 , Brwin Chargaff was accumulating data on the molar ratios of nucleotides using DNA obtained from a variety of sources. Some of these data are provided in the following table: Compare the molar ratios presented from each organism tested and between different organisms. Explain how these data could be used to show that Levene's tetranucleotide model is incorrect. What do they imply about the primary structure of DNA in different organisms?

What were the incorrect versions of DNA structure, and how did Watson and Crick get it right? Now that you have learned a little more of the history behind the elucidation of the secondary structure of DNA, what does it tell you about the role of the scientific community in advancing science? Were Watson and Crick solely responsible?
