California Channel Islands The California Channel Islands have a number of species which are found nowhere else in the world, including tiny island foxes. A National Park was created to protect this unique ecosystem, which developed because the species were isolated from the mainland. A simplified section of the original island food web is shown below: Primary producers: Marine plankton and algae, Island plants Primary consumers: Fish, Crabs, Insects, Deer mice Secondary consumers: Bald eagle, Island Fox Over the last 100 years, this food web has changed drastically because pigs were introduced to the islands. The pigs destroyed much of the vegetation and reduced the populations of crabs and mice on the islands. They also eat a lot of insects. At the same time, the chemical DDT was being used as a pesticide on the mainland. This chemical ran off from agricultural land into the ocean, became concentrated within the food chain, and killed the bald eagles. In their place, golden eagles arrived, which do not eat fish but do eat the pigs and also the island foxes. The new food web is shown below. Golden eagles Island foxes Pigs Fish Crabs Deer mice Insects Marine plankton and algae Island plants If you were employed by the National Park Service to restore the original ecosystem, how would you go about it?

Which population shows genetic drift? A. A population of harvest mice disappears from an area after a devastating flood. B. Wolves in an island population have redder fur than mainland wolves due to the genetic makeup of the first wolf colonizers. C. A chickadee population moves to an area that has more seed-bearing plants. D. A population of tansy begins to bloom later in fall as the climate changes.
