DNA-reading tool for quick identification of species. A biologist and a zoologist at the University of Florida were the first scientists to test the effectiveness of a high-tech handheld device designed to instantly identify the DNA of an animal species ( $P$ LOS Biology, Dec. 2005 ). They used the DNA-reading device on tissue samples collected from mollusks with brightly colored shells. The scientists discovered that the error rate of the device is less than 5 percent. Set up the null and alternative hypotheses as if you want to support the findings.
The method of DNA barcoding allows cataloguing of an organism using rapid sequencing methods. The choice of which gene to use for barcoding is guided by its rate of evolution. Which genes are most useful for barcoding eukaryotes with the exception of plants? a. nuclear genes b. chloroplast genes c. plasmids d. mitochondrial
