Cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide (CO). This gas binds strongly to hemoglobin and competes directly with oxygen for this binding. By doing this, CO can create a condition of hypoxia. What would you expect to happen to the hematocrit of an individual who begins to smoke? Would it increase or decrease? Explain the mechanism by which this change would occur. Please write in complete sentences.

Carbon monoxide $(\mathrm{CO}),$ a component of cigarette smoke, binds irreversibly to hemoglobin. What might be the impact of this phenomenon on a smoker's health?
22.) (3 pts) Cigarette smokers expose themselves to carbon monoxide. What is the effect of carbon monoxide on oxygen transport? How do Cigarette smokers bodies' adjust to accommodate the increased carbon monoxide?

What is the effect on the O2 affinity of hemoglobin? An increase in CO from 1.0 parts per million (ppm) in a normal indoor atmosphere to 30 ppm in a home that has a malfunctioning or leaking furnace. With this one, I am unsure. Is the answer an increase in oxygen affinity of hemoglobin because carbon monoxide bound to one site in hemoglobin will shift the oxygen saturation curve of the remaining sites to the left, resulting in an increased affinity for oxygen? Or would it be a decrease in oxygen affinity for hemoglobin because carbon monoxide binds tighter to hemoglobin than oxygen?
