Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition that causes the body to produce an excess of thick, sticky mucus. CF can affect many different organ systems, including the respiratory system. In the respiratory system, the excess of thick, sticky mucus can not be coughed up or removed from the respiratory system. It also collects in the lungs and coats the inside of the alveolar membrane.
