Scenario 4: Sharon was admitted to the ED feeling short of breath and fatigued. She has just been diagnosed with emphysema. A pulse oximeter placed on her finger is reading an SPO2 of 84%. An ABG test reveals a PCO2 that is elevated. Question: Which component of Sharon's respiratory system is most affected by her emphysema, and would be the best explanation for her test results? Her nasal passages are inflamed so that less air moves in and out Her alveolar walls are damaged and/or destroyed, reducing pulmonary gas exchange efficiency Her bronchi are inflamed, and the resulting constriction has increased resistance Her pleural membranes are inflamed, causing increased friction

Arterial blood gas data from these patients often shows a drop in their arterial oxygen tension (sometimes to around 60 mmHg) while breathing room air. Pure oxygen is then administered (usually this is done well before this happens) C. Why? And how does this help reverse decreases in arterial oxygen partial pressure values?
