Perform biceps curl beginning in full extension and ending in full flexion. Carry out each of the following exercises with adequate periods for recovery in between: a. Begin with your elbow flexed 45 degrees. Use a 5 lb. dumbbell. b. Begin with your elbow at 90 degrees of flexion. Use an 8 lb. dumbbell instead. Attempt to hold the elbow flexed in this position for 10 seconds. c. Begin with your elbow in full flexion. Have your partner hand you an even slightly heavier weight than in 8b. Attempt to slowly lower the weight under control until you reach full extension. Differentiate the effort required to perform the three different exercises. Note if the full range of motion is being achieved and if the subject was able to complete the activity. Explain your answer.

Envision a hypothetical event in which an individual comes to you to discuss exercises that require the elbow flexors and extensors (e.g., curls or pushdowns, etc.). They are trying to learn different exercises that will allow the different attachment points of the triceps and biceps to be exercised differently. Based upon your knowledge of origin, insertion, and action of the elbow muscles, discuss how you could position the upper extremity (i.e., elbow and shoulder joint) in different ways, which would allow you to teach an individual how to target different attachment points of the elbow flexors. Be sure to include a detailed description of the exercise being performed (i.e., "the how to"). Be sure to explain how and why the position of the elbow and shoulder would target different attachment points of the muscle being focused on.

Which statement accurately describes how far the elbows should travel toward the floor (shoulder range of motion) during the eccentric portion of a flat dumbbell chest press? Select one: a. Shoulder range of motion should be consistent for all clients in which the humerus is positioned 45 degrees relative to the floor. b. Shoulder range of motion is variable and determined by the grip the client uses to hold the dumbbells. c. Shoulder range of motion is variable and determined by the load lifted and the client's tissue extensibility. d. Shoulder range of motion should be consistent for all clients in which the humerus is slightly below parallel to the floor at the bottom position.
