When a scientist is attempting to use haplotype analysis to link a disease-causing allele to a molecular marker, it is important for the marker to be close to the disease-causing allele, otherwise ________ may occur. additional mutation crossing over linkage disequilibrium
Suman K.
Within human populations, it is unethical to force people to mate with each other in order to map disease genes. How do scientists go about determining where the disease genes are located? Whole genomes of both diseased individuals and healthy individuals are sequenced. Differences in the sequence are then used as markers to determine where the diseased gene is. It may be unethical, but the only way to map genes is to do so relative to markers in a cross Scientists genotype individuals who have bred in an informative way. For example, a group of diseased individuals that have mated with healthy individuals provide data that can be used to determine where the diseased genes lie. Disease genes can be mapped using principles of recombination hotspots and molecular markers. Markers that are close to the disease genes and not separated by recombination hotspots are in LD with the disease gene. These markers, or SNPs, can be used to map disease genes.
