Polling How can ecological disturbance, such as habitat loss, contribute to the outbreak of a new viral disease in humans? A. Disturbances bring humans and reservoir hosts together in new ways. B. Ecological disturbances increase the rate of mutations. C. Viruses would respond by mutating to harm humans. D. The natural hosts will bite people more.

Step 1
The question asks how ecological disturbance, specifically habitat loss, can lead to the outbreak of a new viral disease in humans. This implies a mechanism by which a virus, likely from a non-human host, can jump to humans and cause an outbreak. Show more…

Question 13: How is climate change causing the emergence of new zoonotic and vector-borne diseases in human populations? (Choose the only correct answer) a. Climate change brings high winds to different areas and an increased number of hurricanes, and the high winds will blow in a lot of mosquitoes to areas where they weren't before. b. Climate change changes the range of some insects that carry diseases that can potentially infect human populations and potentially spread rapidly. c. Climate change makes people feel hot (due to the increasing incidence of heat waves), and that makes them predisposed to getting infected.

For several years, many scientists believed that it was only a matter of time before a major infectious disease outbreak impacted global human populations. We are now in the midst of a global pandemic. Which statement below about the drivers of disease emergence and strategies to prevent and contain emerging infectious disease outbreaks is not correct? A. A large and interconnected global human population can contribute to rapid disease spread B. Surveying virus diversity in wildlife tells us which viruses will spillover into humans C. Loss of natural habitats is a leading cause of pathogen spillover because it increases human contact with wildlife and their pathogens D. The risk of human disease emergence can be reduced by protecting wildlife and environmental health

In terms of community ecology, why are pathogens often more virulent now than in the past? Human activities are transporting pathogens into new habitats (or communities) at an unprecedented rate. Host organisms have become more susceptible because of weakened immune systems. More new pathogens have recently evolved. Medicines for treating pathogenic disease are in short supply.
