Some people think that evolution must be progressive, i.e., that organisms evolve from simple to complex forms over time. Which of the following clearly discredits this idea? Group of answer choices The complex human brain The single-celled origin of all life Mosquitoes developing DDT resistance Vestigial organs like the whale’s pelvis

Imagine that as UV radiation on earth becomes stronger, the average human skin color becomes darker. This is an example of: Group of answer choices chemical evolution microbial evolution microevolution macroevolution Which of the following is NOT a good explanation for the lack of perfectly adapted organisms? Group of answer choices only existing structures can be modified only the fastest and strongest organisms are selected for sometimes the environment changes faster than populations can adapt variations can only be selected for, not designed Which is an example of convergent evolution? Group of answer choices Human embryos and fish embryos have pharyngeal pouches Dolphins and fish have a similar fusiform (streamlined) body shape Whales and humans have similar skeletal configurations in their forelimbs Chickens and pigeons both have wings Some human traits such as artistic ability are prevalent in the population yet do not provide a clear survival advantage. What driving force has most likely contributed to the rise of these traits? Group of answer choices gene flow genetic drift convergent evolution sexual selection

In reality, the structure of the biosphere has been changing for as long as it has existed. Most changes occurred long before humans showed up on the planet. While scientists do not necessarily know what all of those changes were, there are clues scattered around Earth pointing to the fact that the biosphere and the organisms within it have changed over time. Some of the best evidence that species have changed over time is the presence of vestigial body parts. Vestigial body parts are structures in a living organism that do not actively contribute to its life but are likely the remains of structures from the organism's ancestors. Growing such useless structures costs the organism energy and nutrients, so an organism would only have the genes to grow such a structure if that structure had been useful to its ancestors that passed on those genes. Thus, the fact that the organism has a structure that it does not use is an indication that the species has changed over time. Which of the following images is not an example of a vestigial structure?

Lamarck proposed that evolution occurs through the following basic steps: Organisms are born with certain traits. Over the course of an organism's life, these traits gradually change due to pressures in the environment. The changes that occurred during an organism's life are passed on to its young. This idea is similar to current understandings of how evolution works, but it is not quite correct. Which of the following situations is a counterexample that disproves Lamarck's proposed pattern of how evolution occurs? A. Even though the ability to fly would be useful to snakes, snakes cannot spontaneously grow wings. B. Dolphins and whales have become hairless because the fast movement of the water removes all the hair. C. A person who is a championship bodybuilder does not have children who are naturally muscular at birth.
