how summation works in a cell that is receiving multiple inputs from several different neurons.

The neural circuit shown below has 7 neurons (5 are labelled A-E), and 6 synapses (4 are labelled 1-4). Note that the synapses made by 'B' and 'C' are Excitatory (indicated by the + signs). Assume all thresholds = 1, all excitatory outputs = +1 and all inhibitory outputs = -1. None of the neurons are tonically active. The circuit has the following characteristics: • If none of the neurons labelled A-D are active then 'E' will not have an action potential (AP). • If only 'A' has an AP, 'E' WILL have an action potential • If 'A' and 'B' have an AP at the same time, 'E' WILL have an action potential • if 'A', 'B' and 'C' all have an AP at the same time, 'E' will NOT have an action potential. • If 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D' all have an AP at the same time, 'E' WILL have an action potential. Indicate for each synapse 1-4 whether it is excitatory or inhibitory Inhibitory Excitatory Synapse 1 Synapse 2 Synapse 3 Synapse 4

Question 22 If a postsynaptic neuron is stimulated to threshold by spatial summation, this implies that---- A) The postsynaptic cell has a lower than normal threshold B) The postsynaptic cell has many synapses with many presynaptic neurons C) The postsynaptic cell is slow to repolarize D) The postsynaptic cell has many voltage-gated ion channels
