The Bronx Zoo opened in 1899. Choose at three different ways in which the Bronx Zoo helped to modernize zoos and further species conservation efforts. Group of answer choices A-The Bronx Zoo constructed animal exhibits with more natural habitat features rather than concrete floors and block walls. B-The Bronx Zoo captively bred North American bison and released many of the offspring into the wildlife perserve in the western US.. C-The Bronx Zoo used revenues from selling hunting permits to fund its bison reintroduction conservation progam. D-The Bronx Zoo provided educational information about the animals on display in the zoo.. E-The Bronx Zoo sold tickets to the public to brush and feed the zoo's herd of North American bison, which then made the public more interested and supportive of bison conservation.

Bison roamed free in an area along the eastern slopes of the Rockies, in what is now Banff National Park, for thousands of years before being wiped out by hunting in the mid-1800s. Elk Island National Park, located 35 km east of Edmonton has been an important refuge for bison, amongst many other species of animals. In January 2017, 16 bison, which were raised in Elk Island National Park, were moved to Banff National Park. They were contained in a paddock initially, but then the animals were released into a partially fenced area, about 425 km2 in size, in the backcountry. There is hope the animals will eventually be free roaming. Among this population of bison, rapid random changes in their gene pool frequencies may occur due to Select one: a. founder effect b. non-random mating c. bottleneck effect d. increased mutation rate

1. Housing animals in a varied environment with much stimulation leads to changes in neuronal structure. 2. A modern approach for improving the lives of captive animals involves providing them with complex environments that respond to their behaviors, an approach termed environmental enrichment. 3. Until very recently, with regard to animal exploitation, zoos were actually criticized. 4. Early attempts at behavioral enrichment were criticized because they sometimes resembled stereotypic behaviors. 5. As some zoos became more concerned with their roles in conservation education, they began to organize their animals into more ecologically authentic groupings, reflecting their distributions in nature, e.g., lions and zebras grouped together; an approach termed naturalistic enclosures. 6. Historically, inadequate traditional zoos featured only a single individual, or at most, a few representatives of any one species--an approach termed "stamp collecting." This frequently led to limited genetic diversity. 7. Many small, exotic felids (e.g., sand cats) frequently exhibit poor reproduction in captivity. Researchers have determined that one source of this problem was inadequate environmental enrichment. 8. The preceding reproductive problem probably arose from a specific type of learning characteristic of infant animals, wherein they learn to recognize their mothers, a process called imprinting. 9. Prolonged stress can result in all of the following symptoms except increased appetite. 10. Stereotypic behavior, a behavior that was once thought to be pathological, is now considered by some behaviorists to represent a captive animal's attempt to manage overly abundant time in a barren, unresponsive environment.
