These chromosomes in Drosophila are an example of ____________ , where polyploid tissues are found in an otherwise diploid organism. In the ____________ of Drosophila, homologous chromosomes double approximately 9 times. The four types of chromosomes come together to form a very large ____________ . An organism has a haploid number of 4. How many chromatids are in diploid nuclei of Drosophila at prophase of mitosis?

The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has a total of eight chromosomes (four pairs) in each of its somatic cells. Somatic cells are all cells of the body except those that will divide to form the gametes (ova or sperm). Assume you are a microscopist viewing fruit fly cells that are undergoing mitosis. Within each of the circles (which represent cell membranes), draw what you would expect to see if you were looking at a cell in the stage of mitosis indicated (2.5 pts). - Prophase - Prometaphase - Metaphase - Anaphase - Telophase - Cytokinesis If you added a drug to your Drosophila cells that interfered with the attachment of the spindle to centromeres, in which phase above would cells be stuck? (2.5 pts)
