This week, I discussed Massey's argument about the perverse outcomes of immigration enforcement in the US during the 1990's and early 2000's, in which expensive barriers led to an increase the unauthorized mirgant population in the US. Given the failure of enforcement policies over the past thirty years, what options might US claimsmakers, policy makers, and social problems workers pursue? Or is more enforcement still the answer? There are really two parts to this issue:
How should the US policymakers address the needs of 11.2 million long-term (ie.-on average 10-20 years) immigrants who live in the US today without authorization and have no pathway to citizenship?
How shouldl the US government respond to more recent increases in new migrants who are seeking asylum from war torn nations like Haiti and Venezuala in the US?
