Case Study: You are working in a medical clinic in a poor area. You have a young patient, Alfred, with a skeletal disease. Alfred seems a bit small for his age, though in itself that isn't much cause for alarm. Upon examination, you notice that Alfred's chest protrudes anteriorly and that his knees seem too far apart when he stands. He complains that his "bones hurt." In addition to the skeletal problems already detailed, Alfred has experienced muscular problems such as weakness and spasms. You've learned that Alfred has had a rough time in his short life. He has grown up in an environment where food is often insufficient or of poor quality. He and his mother spend much of their time indoors because there is little for a child to do safely outdoors where they live. Alfred does help around the home as much as he can. X-rays present some potentially useful information. His lower limbs are indeed malformed, "curving outward" at the knees. You also note evidence of fractures in multiple locations, though Alfred is not particularly rambunctious and his mother is gentle and loving. - What bone disease does Alfred likely have? Keep in mind Alfred's age, life circumstances, and symptoms. 1. achondroplastic dwarfism 2. osteogenesis imperfecta 3. osteoporosis 4. rickets -- Bone is a connective tissue, so the matrix is probably affected by Alfred's disease. Given your diagnosis, which component of Alfred's bone matrix is most affected by this disease? 1. hydroxyapatite mineral 2. collagen fibers -- Which word would best describe Alfred's bone tissue, compared to healthy bone? 1. brittle 2. soft -- Can Alfred's disease be cured? 1. Yes 2. No
