We discussed in class that there are two components to what we typically call pressure with very different physical bases - molecular collisions and gravity. One of these is omnidirectional and one is due to a force that is directed downward. But if you measure the pressure at different depths, it is the same in all directions and it increases with increasing depth in all directions. How can you use what you know about how different states of matter resist forces and what it means to resist forces to explain this?

We can understand how pressure in water depends on depth by considering a stack of bricks. The pressure below the bottom brick is determined by the weight of the entire stack. Halfway up the stack, the pressure is half because the weight of the bricks above is half. To explain atmospheric pressure, we should consider compressible bricks, like those made of foam rubber. Why is this so?
