LP4: For this reflection, think about the characteristics of language and the relationship between language and meaning. Share a time when you had a communication obstacle due to a difference in verbal encoding and/or decoding. How did the characteristics of language (language is arbitrary, language is abstract, and language changes over time) and the relationship between language and meaning (semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics) affect the communication obstacle? Identify and describe at least one characteristic of language and one concept of language and meaning that affected the obstacle. To complete this Reflection, you may create a written response.

Topic 1: The World Culture Topic Rationale: The perception of culture determines Christian ways to engage culture. The Christian view of culture as an abstract system does not reflect the reality of culture. Culture is cumulative, material, and dimensional. Culture is what Christians make of the world. Potential leaders must be aware of these ideas to lead well. Objectives: Assess methods to view culture. Evaluate the concept of culture as specific goods. One way to understand the role of culture in the world is through analysis of its "specific goods" (e.g., Internet, highways, malls, telephone, atomic bomb). Is the concept of "specific goods" a valid assumption about the way the world is or the way the world should be? How would this concept make a difference in the way Christians engage culture? Explain.
