The short term, we still have glycogen. At this point, blood sugar levels are maintained through the use of breaking down glycogen stored in the organ. Breaking this glycogen down is called glycogenolysis. After glycogen has been depleted, we still need to keep our blood sugars in the normal range, so we turn to amino acids, glycerol, and lactate in the process of gluconeogenesis to create sugar for the blood. If fasting continues, ketone bodies will be created. Acetyl CoA is not able to be metabolized in the TCA cycle because of the shortage of oxaloacetate. This leads to Acetyl CoA being converted into Ketone bodies. Ketosis is not life threatening in individuals whose bodies are able to have the kidneys reabsorb ketone bodies, maintaining a balanced pH. After prolonged fasting, the body will begin to draw from protein stores to create energy for the body, resulting in muscle wasting.
